Taming of a Voice.docx

This collection of poems is one that was produced during my Poetry Workshop class. For our final project we had to hand in a portfolio of our best work from the semester. Though I am proud of many assignments that I have completed, I chose this particular piece because it displays a side of me that I do not often get to show. While I am a biology major and I enjoy fact-based research and learning, I do like to put my creativity to use every now and again.

Poetry has always been a secret passion of mine. I would not say that I am exceptionally good at it, but I do enjoy expressing myself in this way. I do not usually share my poems with others, and so this Poetry Workshop class forced me to step outside of my comfort zone. These particiluar poems were my favorite pieces from that course. Not only were they ones that I shared to the class, thereby helping me some of my greatest fears (public speaking, possible humiliation, etcetera), they are written in varying forms that display my diversity as a writer. The first poem, "Seeking Satisfaction" was a free verse poem, whereas the format of "Vanilla" is a sestina; I absolutely fell in love with this format. It now heavily influences the work that I create. My final poem, "Mr. Daniels Stole My Life", was in the arrangement of a sonnet. All three formats can create a different atmosphere for the reader, and I am proud of my ability to utilize them.

These pieces are some of my more mature poems. I noticed a distinct transition from my early works in the class and from previous years to this collection. Prior poems seemed to have a naive feel, and often focused on topics such as scenary. My attempts at harnessing emotions in other pieces of work always seemed to be too inflated. Perhaps it was my heightened exposure to great works of poetry, but this collection seemed to grasp more complicated scenarios and heartfelt emotions.

This piece of work has allowed me to grow as a creative writer. I find myself focusing more on the meaningfulness of ideas rather than the mere appearance of them. It also gave me more confidence in my abilities as a writer and speaker. I am often nervous to share my work with others, no matter the subject, and gaining the experience from reading these poems and receiving feedback will be valuable in other areas of my life.
