Economics of Happiness bought about many ideas that I did not think about, therefore I was happy to have seen the documentary. It was great to see that there are sustainable cultures and communities that live out there perfectly fine and even seem to be at a certain point of eternal bliss. When the tribe that was so sustainable made a completely 180, because of western civilization, it made me question if what we are doing is right. Everyone comes to America because of all this opportunity and to flourish but while America does provide those things, if not used in the right way and in the right state of mind, having so much can actually be destructive. In the video a woman mentioned that if just India consumed the way the United States did, we would need three worlds just for that one country. It just goes to show how much of a consumeristic society we are and have become. One interesting point is, You can't have infinite growth on a finite planet. This is something that people often forget and always want to continue to have more and more when there is not enough space for that! It's a simple statement but such a complicated thought that people always seem to forget. One worldview is dangerous for diversity. One of the most beautiful things of the world is the diversity that it has to offer but if the world has just one view, what does that say about the world we are becoming. It does not promote diversity; It's great to learn about various cultures but not to become like one. The western culture and western ways are taking over the world and it even seems like the corporations are the ones raising children. This was such an interesting thought raised by the video. Children before they can speak are already instilled this idea of wanting more and more. The television programming and commercials have subliminal messages that make children know how to want more and more and I think it is sad if that's the road we are heading on. I also like the video because it related to our class with the idea of community. In the video they spoke about localizing the economy, sports, and culture and that by doing that we would be better off. Because we keep thinking in such big terms, and while that is important the first place one must start off with is their community. One must have a local outlook before they have a world outlook.
