During Week 2, we discussed A Sense of Place, by none other than Michael Shapiro.
In class we brought up both Eric Newby and Sara Wheeler.
Eric Newby was notably different. While the majority prefer to travel alone (perhaps to find themselves or experience things on their own), he traveled with his wife Wanda. Together they visited various places such as the Ganges River and Ireland. Personally, I found this fact very romantic and remarkable. He would not take a job unless Wanda was allowed to journey around with him. Though, he promised she would "be made to work", and that she did.
Sara Wheeler brought her notebook along with her everywhere to document her travels. Particularly in one continent did she find much beauty. She visited Antarctica after gaining interest about the travels of Captain Robert Scott. Originating from New York, I can see why a place like Antarctica might be like heaven. We have so many preoccupations and distractions, that a place like that is unique. For once, we could get the chance to breathe. She said it's "the absence of things I find alienating". I hope some day I can have the privilege to visit Antarctica, or at least a place that's the polar opposite of New York.... Pun intended.

I agree with you when you describe Eric Newby bringing his wife on his travels as "romantic and remarkable". It demonstrates his love for his wife. I adore the fact that he does not want to be without her.
I enjoyed your analysis of Sara Wheeler. It was nice to get someone else's view on her travels being that we did not discuss her in class. Your pun was a nice touch.

Good comments about Sara Wheeler; we ran out of time and really didn't get a chance to talk about her in class, but you do a great job zeroing in on her motivation.
