Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of background music on second grade students during writing time.  Twenty four students were observed for six writing sessions over a period of two weeks.  For the duration of the research, the writing sessions were alternated; one session with soft music, the next session with no music, and so on.  Students’ off-task behaviors were recorded every five minutes.  The targeted behaviors were: not writing, talking to peers, getting out of seat, and turning around in the seat.  In addition to observing off-task behaviors, students’ writing samples were collected at the end of each session.  Based on the results, the music had some positive impact on students’ off-task behavior.  The number of students talking to peers and students asking questions during a writing session accompanied with background music had decreased.  However, students’ written work did not show significant difference
