More than anything else, my four years at Manhattanville have made me a careful reader, a stronger writer, and a more comfortable and confident speaker.

Growing up, I always loved English classes and I never hesitated to say I loved reading and writing. I enjoyed the literature we read and the assignments we were asked to complete. It was not until college, however, that I fully developed a written voice.

The college writing and literature courses I have taken have been extremely tough and demanding. Not only is it imperative to keep on top of the reading assignments, but it is also vitally important to be observant and vigilant in the practice of "active reading." A hot term in education today, active reading demands that the reader be engaged and participatory in the reading process. For me, that means buying all my books so that I can write notes and underline passages. Courses I have taken at Manhttanville have encouraged me to write in the margins and jump into the text, and these are skills that have made me a careful and observant reader.

The practice of active reading has led me to become a stronger writer. Advised by my professors, the notes and connections I highlight in the text allow me to be organized and direct in my writing process. When I am asked to write on a text, my notes serve as a map that guides my thoughts and ideas. As a result, my writing has become concise and direct. I feel confident that I can stay on topic and clearly execute the task.

Finally, my reading and writing skills have truly become the gateway for becoming more comfortable in speaking in front of others. When I feel confident in the quality and planning of my work, I feel more confident in sharing it. My professors have taught me to put 100% into everything I put forth with my name on it, and, as a result, I have gained the confidence to share my thoughts and work collaboratively with others.

Please find below a sample of my writing.
