You are going to wish you could say you knew Joshua Mullin. Spending fall semester hard at work with Professor Goldsmith and the Midi band performing their rendition of Edgar Varèse’s famous piece Poème Electronic, Joshua turned his attention to his biggest work in his senior recital. When composing, arranging and writing music for the recital, Joshua brought many aspects of his past four years at Manhattanville as well as trying new ideas. Playing the saxophone, guitar, piano, ukulele and recently starting to learn the drums, Joshua is always trying to expand his knowledge on different types of instruments. He considers himself a life long learner in the field of music.

Back in high school, Joshua was a member of the Eastport South Manor Marching Band who competed in the Newsday Hofstra competition every year. The ESM marching band is also a regular participant to the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City. Trying out on the tenor saxophone, Joshua made first chair with the ESM Wind Ensemble traveling to competitions in Philadelphia, Hershey Park, Dorney Park and Six Flags.

Once leaving Eastport South Manor and arriving at Manhattanville College, Joshua began playing in the schools newly revived MIDI band. He’s an active member for the past 7 semesters and regularly helps in preparing a concert for the end of each term. While Poème Electronic might have been the biggest project he worked on there were other pieces arranged or composed of similar caliber. That same semester working on the Poème, Joshua brought together the traditional Christmas classics of O’Holy Night and Silent Night into one piece known as O’Holy Silent Night. This piece kept the classic melody while adding his own interpretations and harmonies in the piece. Over the semesters in Midi Band he has done other works such as a cover of the Linkin Park song Session, which he also arranged and conducted. Midi Band has also been an important aspect of his time at Manhattanville College.

Some other notable works Joshua has worked on is his song titled Reaching and Falling written specifically for the student film Famous about an aspiring songwriter in a vicious music scene. As a communications minor, he has also been apart of the movie process in the making of student films titled Stalker and Manhattanville Conspiracy. Recently as of last semester he began interning at a recording studio in downtown White Plains. Over that time he has enjoyed every minute of it and has learned much, taking what he had learned in the classroom into every day experiences.

Not all of Joshua’s work is done the music field; he spends much of his free time doing community service. Back in high school, he would spend every Tuesday staying after school and making sandwiches for the homeless. Volunteering at his neighborhood church was also of importance to his upbringing. When coming to college Joshua joined the Duchesne center where he continues to help out the community. Going into the city on the Midnight Run, which entails bringing sandwiches to the homeless, gives Joshua the chance to continue his experiences from high school. He is also a recent addition to the Manhattanville chapter of the National Society of Leadership, which helps bring out the best qualities in college students nationally.
