Kate Shannon

Class of 2016

Kate's essay entitled An Ongoing Struggle:The Madres de La Plaza’s Fight for Justice During and After the Argentine Dirty War can be accessed here.

Kate Shannon, under the guidance of Profs. Gregory Swedberg and Joseph Fasano, examined the topic of the Madres de la Plaza’s fight for justice during and after the Argentine Dirty War.  Shannon, a burgeoning History major, was particularly struck by the commitment to community service at Manhattanville and this drew her to our campus.  Kate says that one of the main lessons she learned through the process of developing her freshmen essay was how to tie together a variety of sources. She also learned how to narrow down large amounts of information.  She advises Freshman working on their essays to start both the research and essay early and choose a topic that they are interested in. “I think that an interest in the topic is the most important part of writing an essay because that is what motivates you to learn as much as you can and form an argument that you are passionate about.”
