Abstract

In the past I have improvised a self-study method that lacked any real structure or support. I made decisions about my teaching practice that were based on intuition, textbook scenarios, or occasional student feedback. When I was hired for a yearlong assignment to teach art to two girls who are being home schooled in Southern New York State I took the opportunity to make positive changes to my teaching practice. One of the changes I made was to abandon my old self-study methods and approach self-study in a new and improved manner by using a reflective method and qualitative research methods. Initially, I was doubtful that using conventional self-study methods would alter my teaching and growth as a teacher. I wondered how collecting data and being reflective would help me understand who I am as a teacher, meet the needs of my students and improve my teaching practice. Through the course of my self-study I learned the answers to these questions and so much more.
